How many are left?
There were a million French nationals in Algeria in the colonial period (and 9.5 million Algerians). A hundred and fifty thousand of them left before 1962, when 651,000 more of them departed. What happened to the 200,000 who remained in the country in 1963? “The history of those who stayed has never been written,” according to historian Benjamin Stora. Algerian historians never dared show much interest in the topic as the official version of events was dictated by the FLN.
